Gowdas belong to the state of Karnataka. The various Gowda communities of the state include Kuruba Gowda, Vokkaligas, Lingayats etc. Gowdas follow elaborate wedding rituals for successful married life of couples. Some of the major wedding rituals and traditional items applicable in Gowda marriages are Hasegode, Kukke Tumbuvudu, Talige Battalu, Go Pooja, Uguru Madichuva Shastra, Ganga Pooja, Mai Maduva, Dibbana, Talige Deepa, Mettaki Sibbala etc. The marriage dais in the Gowda wedding is called Hasegode. Mai Maduva, the gifting session, is traditionally done with groom seated on the Hasegode. Bamboo woven kukkes, smeared with turmeric and vermillon, are used in Gowda weddings. The scented water in the Kukke is used by the priest for making offerings to the Lord. The Talige Battalu is used for placing auspicious marriage items like turmeric, vermillon, betel leaf and arecanut, bangles, palmyra leaf roll and a mirror and comb. A Go Pooja involving worship of cattle is part of the marriage ceremony. The Uguru Madichuvu Shastra refers to the nail cutting ritual of the groom by the barber. The same nail ritual is also done in the house of Gowda Brides. A Ganga pooja is typically performed in a nearby well with traditional pooja materials. The proceeding of the groom and his entourage to the house of bride is called Dibbana. In the bride's house, the girl is decked with the zari sari, jewellery, and flowers. As part of the wedding rituals, during the wedding ceremony, the groom's palms are kept in a cup-like position and the palms of bride's hand are placed over it. The palms are washed with milk, ghee and smeared with sandalwood paste. This is followed by other traditional rituals and the parents affirm that they are giving their daughter in marriage to the groom by saying his name and that of his father's. The groom, amidst the chanting of sacred hymns ties the mangalasutra to the Gowda Bride. This followed by the priest taking the couple outside to show the Arundati star. This is followed by an Arati for the couples seated in Hasegode. The marriage concludes with a grand marriage feast.
