The Mochi community was involved in manufacture of leather products; however, today they are in different professions. They are spread in Indian sub-continent in states like Punjab, west Bengal, Orissa, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. They are followers of different religions - Hindu, Muslims and Sikhs and speak the language of the region they have settled. Mochi's have the following sub-groups, the Sinolia, Sasendia, Sonwal, and Nidaria. There are many Mochi families in Gujarat. They have the following sub-castes like Chauhan, Parmar, Solanki, Chaudhri, Vala, and Vaghela. In Punjab, the Mochi gots (gotra) are Ballu, Bhangar, Jhalli, Sindhu, Mahman and more. Muslim Mochi's are mostly Sunni's and their clans include Bagri, Barwar, Bargujar, Gaur, Jadon, Jat and Shaikh. The Mochi's as a community is endo-gamous, that is the Mochi matrimony takes place within their own community. They are monogamous and a second wife is permitted in exceptional cases of barrenness. It is exogamous as a clan and the number of clan varies among the different regions. Mochi family may not take a wife from his '˜gotra' or that of his mother's. In the recent times, Mochi matrimony is taking place amongst their kin. Marriages are arranged by families and dowry is given by the bride's family in cash and kind. There are communities like in Gujarat, which conducts '˜samuhik' marriages for the Mochi community. There are a large number of brides and grooms to choose from within the community for marriage. These communities or societies provide monetary help to the families and conduct marriages.
